The BMI as a measurement of health has significant limitations. For instance, it does not take into account genetic history or habits such as smoking and drinking. However, it is useful in connection with several other measurements to determine your risk for certain diseases including diabetes and heart disease. It is important to consult with a doctor before basing any nutritional decisions on the results of this calculator.

What is the BMI?

The BMI (Body Mass Index) was developed by a Belgium statistician by the name of Adolphe Quelet in the mid-19th-century. It is an internationally recognized measurement of weight status, though the table which relates the numeric value to the actual weight status varies in several countries. We use the categories established by the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Does the Health-and-Fitness-Calculator really calculate how healthy I am?

The Health-and-Fitness-Calculator gives you two useful measurements, one of which being your BMI (Body Mass Index) and the other being your risk of certain weight and size related illnesses like diabetes and CVD. These two measurements are generally good indicators as to your general state of health, but is not a substitute for more comprehensive measurements of health like physicals and doctors visits.

How do I measure my waist?

Your waist is defined as the area between the bottom of your ribs and the top of your pelvic bone. When you fill in the waist measurement input box, you will see measuring tapes around the people's waists, which should give you a good indicator of where to measure on your own body.
